Every 2nd page of this book IS NOT what you expect it to be. True?
The idea for “Engãnos”, produced by the Argentinian publisher V&R Editoras, is that of Ilan Breman and illustrations are by Guilherme Karsten. This is one of the 67 wordless books from IBBY “Silent Books” exhibition, which is on display until 24 April 2021 at “Lost in Books” in Fairfield. If you are in Sydney be sure to check it out.
“Engãnos” is an inventive wordless picture book which invites us to play with the interpretation of silhouettes while stimulating us to observe, reason and imagine what they hide. On one page we are presented with a silhouette that implies a particular scenario or activity. Our mind jumps to the obvious conclusion of what this picture is all about. However, on the next page, the silhouette disappears to reveal the true colours and motivation of the scene.
Ilan Brenman was born in Israel but lives and works in Brasil. He studied psychology at Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo in Portugal and has a doctorate from the University of Education of São Paulo. He has written more than 60 books for children, including numerous award winners. He contributes to a CBN radio program where he talks about education and literature. His work is said to capture and reveal the very essence of childhood.
Guilherme Karsten was born in South Brazil. He is the author and illustrator of many award-winning picture books published in Brazil, Latin America, Europe and Asia. He also illustrates books for other authors, in this instance collaborating with Ilan Brenman. You would be amazed at how clever this particular book is, check it out below.
